An Inspirational Success Story of Women From the Slums of Mumbai

In a heartwarming story, women from the slums of Jari Mari, Mumbai turned their new-found passion for mehendi into their profession! SRLC joined hands with Jagruti Kendra, a social organisation which works with self-help women groups, to organise a mehendi training course for women from the slum colonies of Jari Mari. Participants in the course ranged from enthusiastic young girls to middle aged women home-makers. Over a 6 month period, SRLC sevaks taught them the art of mehendi. Towards the culmination of the course, SRLC organised a competition for the students, judged by renowned mehendi artists. Extremely impressed with the quality displayed by the participants, the judges sponsored the winners’ training to augment their skills at their mehendi institute. Through this training, participants who had joined the course to learn a new skill were offered an opportunity of a lifetime to become professional mehendi artists! Three students were trained at the institute and are now able to secure orders for their mehendi service and develop it into a profession! Such vocational skills imparted by SRLC have helped women become self-reliant.
