Home Archives for 2025 Page 20 The Principle of Aparigraha Modern day materialism defines a successful and happy person as one with the many possessions, great wealth and high status. Through an understanding of the Jain principle of aparigraha, Pujya Gurudevshri enlightens us on what brings true contentment in life. A great deal has been spoken and written about aparigraha or non-possessiveness; however, we are incognisant of its true depth. No doubt, we talk of non-possessiveness with great respect and even worship the one who is non-possessive; yet, we remain unaware of its essence. Understanding Possessiveness How can we acquaint ourselves with the true significance of non-possessiveness? To understand what non-possessiveness is, one must first comprehend the meaning of possessiveness. Commonly, possessiveness is understood as the possession of objects. But the Enlightened Ones say that possessiveness is delusion. It does not mean having a collection of things; it is the feeling of being the owner of those things. The ‘number of things’ therefore does not determine an individual’s possessiveness; it is the attitude he harbours towards those things, the way he relates to them that determines his possessiveness. Our sense of ownership is not restricted to things alone, we display feelings of ownership even towards people. A husband tries to own his wife; a father his son; a teacher his student etc. This possessiveness is just another dimension of violence. Ownership implies possessiveness and where there is possessiveness, the relationship becomes violent. This is true because no one can own another without exercising violence by taking away his independence, by making the other a slave of his desires. One may question, ‘Why do humans want to control others? Why are they so interested in possessing others?’ In response to this, the Wise say that because man has no authority over himself, he tries to make up for that ‘lack of command’, by ruling others. We wish to become independent by making others dependent on us. But we do not realise that dependence is on both sides; both parties get tied. Reigning over others cannot make us their owners; rather, it breeds sorrow. It is like attempting to quench one’s thirst with fire! Possessiveness Leads to Slavery We become slaves to the ones we try to possess; we get bound to them. The seeds of slavery are hidden in the very desire to be the owner. And the reason for this is that our sense of ownership is dependent on them. If the ones we claim to own leave us, with them goes our ownership too. If our ownership is dependent on others, then how can we be called their owners? Deep reflection reveals how we get bound by them, how they become our owners. Once a mendicant entered a village. He saw a cow, tied by a rope, being led away by his owner. Seeing this, he asked the villagers, “Is this man tied to the cow or is the cow tied to this man?” The villagers replied in unison, “It is the cow that is tied to the man. The man is the owner; he is independent. The cow is owned, dependent and hence, a slave.” The mendicant asked again, “If the cow runs away, will this man run after the cow?” The people replied, “Naturally, the man will run after the cow.” He further asked, “If the man runs away, will this cow run after the man?” The ascetic clarified the underlying meaning of his question, “Consider carefully, who is really dependent on whom. The cow is tied to the man with a rope but the man is imperceptibly bound to the cow. He is the one who cannot let go of the cow. It is only with this subtle insight that it becomes evident that the man is bound to the cow and not vice-versa.” The only difference between the owner and the owned is that the slavery of the one who is owned is visible and that of the owner is not. What is most amusing is that the one who is tied may even try to escape, but the other is under the delusion that he is independent. The secrets of possessiveness are very profound. It is essential that we understand its subtle facets. We collect things so that they can serve us but instead, we end up serving them. Does the treasure chest look after us or do we look after it? Objects are not to be blamed. We become their slaves of our own accord. It is our perception, our thoughts and beliefs that bring about this slavery. How can things make anyone their slave? They are not even aware that humans believe they own them. If one is filled with the desire for things, he experiences bondage, and bereft of desire, he is free. Who is a Real Owner? In reality, one whose ownership is dependent on others, who tries to rule over others and make them his slaves is only possessive but not a true owner. One who has no longing to make anyone a slave and does not wish to own anything or anyone, he alone is a real owner in this world. He alone whose ownership is not dependent on others, is truly non-possessive. He alone is truly happy, peaceful, settled and secure. Possessiveness implies forgetfulness of the truth that one is not the real owner of things, but deep within the knowledge that, ‘I am not the owner’ remains. Even Alexander and Hitler knew this. Strangely, the more one knows this reality, the more he tries to spread and strengthen his sovereignty on the outside. It is possible that he may forget for a short while but time and again he remembers, “I am not the owner, I am not independent, I am not at peace, I am not happy.” This creates an inner void. One may try to fill this emptiness with wealth, name, fame, status and furniture but that vacuum, that hole, that inner poverty remains as it is. External things, outer associations cannot fill this abyss because they all remain outside, they cannot enter the realm of the Self. One is amassing ‘things’ but what is actually to be attained is the ‘Self.’ ‘Things’ can never become the ‘Self.’ What is Non-Possessiveness? If outer things cannot fill the inner vacuum, then is it possible to do so by giving up those things? One feels that he has tried to bring the external associations closer and attempted to collect things, but these did not satisfy the inner wants; so he should try renouncing them and thus fill the emptiness. The Enlightened Ones question, ‘If the inner deficiency could not be filled by the presence of external objects, then how can giving them up fill the space within?’ But man is fundamentally mistaken in his thinking. First, he wishes to fill the inner chasm by collecting external things and having attained them, when he realises that they are incapable of filling the inner space, he tries to do so by relinquishing them. He is unable to understand that what cannot be filled with the addition of things will not be filled by subtracting them either. Non-possessiveness does not mean giving up outer things. Non-possessiveness means attaining inner completeness by realising the Self, by abiding in the Self. When inner fulfilment is attained, the emptiness within is filled and scurrying around to collect outer objects ceases. Having experienced inner absoluteness, the interest neither to hoard things nor to give them up remains. The outer associations drop on their own. When the Self is realised, inner wealth is attained. Then alone, does one understand how vain the effort of collecting or renouncing outer things is. Once inner completeness is attained, the hold over external things is automatically given up. One experiences that in reality one can never hold on to anything. Such a one, being in the midst of all, becomes non-possessive. The meaning of non-possessiveness is not to have the sense of ownership. Non-possessiveness is transformation in one’s relationship with others. When the sense of ownership weans, it results in non-possessiveness. With clarity about possessiveness comes the manifestation of non-possessiveness. May all attain the sublime state of being truly non-possessive. Home Archives for 2025 Page 20 My Divine Teacher Jignasha Mehta, regional head of Divinetouch Europe and Australia, head of Shrimad Rajchandra Divinetouch, London, and a teacher by profession recounts her journey as a student in the Divine classroom. Experience with her, how the Master has simply and subtly taught her profound lessons of life . It all started with the first lesson below and what follows is a journey that is full of the most wonderful moments to remember and rejoice. But there have been times that were also dark and because of His love, they passed. In all of the occasions there were lessons for me to learn from as He taught me, a teacher! Pray and He Will Answer As He climbed into the car, put on the passenger seatbelt and looked through the windscreen, she began to wave. Like a child she waved at Him, like a child she smiled and did not care who was looking or how she looked. This impulse at that time she could not explain. To her He was unknown, to Him… He alone knows. It was summer 2004, after the last satsang at Kingsbury High School that this momentous occasion occurred and is now etched in the heart of Jignasha Mehta. Previous to this, a year earlier, she had asked Gurudev, “I would like a Guru, how will I find my Guru?” He had replied, “Pray every day to God to show you your Guru.” This she had religiously done, never knowing that He was the one! The above was my first lesson, to pray and the answer will come. From this moment onwards, began my journey with the Divine. Work with Love I believed I was a good worker, whether it was as a teacher in school or at home as a mother, wife, daughter-in-law and so on. In December 2005, Bapaji asked me to start Magictouch in London. I was apprehensive about this new venture, but thankfully I did not pay much attention to my fears and flowed with an energy that encouraged me to begin. We started with six children and one sevak, Komal Mehta, at home in our living room. As time went by and I taught, worked with other didis and liaised with parents, I realised He was teaching me how to work with love! The techniques adopted by Magictouch were different to my education and training. There was no room for harsh discipline or raised voices in the Magictouch culture. I found these methods most difficult in having to teach my own two children. When they sought more attention than the other children in the class or behaved in a manner I deemed inappropriate, I had to learn to refrain from using ‘my’ methods and replace with responding with love. This lesson was a wonderful tool which I embedded in my job as a school teacher and in other spheres of my life. It is a wonderful challenge to find ways of acting out of love rather than duty. He is the Doer Over the years, my seva grew from being the head of Divinetouch, London to being the regional head of Divinetouch, Europe and Australia. The role comprises of working alongside and supporting beautiful sevaks of all programmes in Divinetouch. The capacity to perform seva has increased with the realisation that I am not the doer. When Arhat Touch was launched in 2009, we had to prepare for an inauguration. As the preparations began, it was clear that this was a big event. Dignitaries were to be personally invited. Guest speakers, professional performers and an array of logistics all had to be managed. Along the way many changes came, but to my surprise, I remained calm. I had always feared change. I liked to plan events in detail and liked for them to then stay that way. Bapaji had a different plan. The night before the inauguration I sat with Atmarpit Amitprabhu and the whole order of events was changed. Out of the window went my spreadsheet with the flow of the inauguration celebrations. A new one was drawn up and the team beautifully embraced it. Upon reflection, it was clear that Bapaji’s gift of the study of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita was the key to this success. That year I had spent time in front of Lord Krishna at our local ISKCON temple and churned over Bapaji’s words saying, “You are not the doer, you are a murli in His hands.” This message remained in my heart during the celebrations, which included Samanijis giving blessings in an attendance of over 600 guests and Dignitaries. But most of all it allowed for the words, “I know now that I have chosen the right person for this seva” from Bapaji. Be Inspired and Enjoy the Glory of those Around You I adore Bapaji. Bapaji has told us that God is in all of us. This has made me think that I should be able to see good qualities in people around me. In studying the four Bhavnas during Paryushan 2012, there was a wonderful shift. When exercising Pramodbhavna, I learned the focus should be on identifying the good in people. Then, once that is observed, joy should be experienced. This was a journey for me, as I had a tendency to feel that seeing beauty in others meant I was lacking in goodness – which Bapaji explained was a form of negative ego. However, in persisting in this exercise, there was an uplifting feeling of how wonderful it is that this person possesses this quality, I too will pray and work to achieve the same. I enjoy this experiment as it gives a different pair of eyes to look through, not judge and label others, but to observe their beauty and praise them for it. He is with Me, through Good and Bad I had told Bapaji in the early days that I had not travelled the world. He said He would take me and He did. Dharmayatras around India, America, Africa and Europe all followed. They were full of amazing moments. In these trips there was not only a discovery of the outer world, but also of the inner world. Through His satsangs, layers of dirt were being uncovered. I was finding a girl who sought attention, whose monkey mind dictated her actions, who found ways to blame others for any misfortune. I also found a girl who experienced darkness. I recall a trip to the USA, Bapaji told me to take along a book called, ‘Come be my Light’ which shared the private writings of Mother Teresa. I could not get hold of a copy of the book and thus did not fulfil His ajna. During the trip I experienced many dark moments. Negative thoughts lingered throughout the trip and I believed I had no control over them, they represented a truth. Upon returning to the UK, I found the book, ironically in our home! Upon reading the first few words in the book, tears welled in my eyes. This amazing, inspiring woman also experienced darkness, but never did she let it win over her. She achieved wonders in spite of this darkness that stayed with her for many years! He was giving me the guidance that would have carried me through this phase, I found it late, but so grateful to have found it. From this I learnt that He will carry me through good and bad, I have to see the hand He is holding out. Imbibe the Knowledge Much joy is experienced in listening to satsang. I feel loved, content and excited that His words make sense to me. However, if you asked me a few days later what in satsang was so fulfilling, I could not say. In the UK Dharmayatra of 2010, in a quiz in the Bath retreat, Bapaji asked me a question related to a point in satsang which He had directly told me. I could not answer! He gently and smilingly said that it was no good to listen if you were not going to take the knowledge, especially if it was given directly to you. I did not take the message seriously. It took many ‘no smiles’ from Bapaji to make me realise my lack of samyak shravan. His madhur vani is a fuel for transformation. I am making the effort to pick take home points and practise prayogs so that I am sculpted by His hands. Become the Faceless Angel In August 2011, I was invited to the balcony of Bapaji’s room in Dharampur. There, He stated that I had increased my level and He would now call me ‘Mumukshuta’ instead of ‘Jignasha’. At this time nothing really registered. It was after Bapaji shared this new name during a satsang on Shri Vimalnath Bhagwan Stavan that it sunk in. In the same summer, He also gifted me with a statue of an angel. She is so beautiful. When you think of beauty, you immediately think of the face. This angel has no facial features. Her posture, her surrendership symbolises her beauty. This is my goal. I want no personal identity, if I need one then let it be the one He gives me. This life is to remain in His service, to do His darshan, and be worthy to be His angel. These are some of the lessons I have learnt. Some may mirror your journey and it is reassuring to know we are not alone, we have Bapaji. The blessing of the opportunity to look back and acknowledge His upkar has been an overwhelming and humbling experience – I feel He is Magnificent, He is God, He is beyond words! Home Archives for 2025 Page 20 Patrank – 913 Dharampur, Chaitra Vad 4, Wednesday, 1956 Received your letter. The state of tranquillity prevails here. Suddenly, physical discomfort has arisen and that is being experienced with calmness; this was known to me, and so there was satisfaction. All worldly beings, driven by karma, constantly keep experiencing manifestation of comfort-discomfort. Of them, mostly, the manifestation of discomfort alone is experienced. Sometimes or in association with some body, manifestation of comfort appears to be experienced more; but in reality, even there, the inner blaze alone is burning. The discomfort that even the omniscient one does not have words that can describe it, this soul has experienced such infinite infinite discomfort; and even now, if its causes are not destroyed, it will continue to experience, that is certain. Having known this, the thoughtful excellent men, became eager to seek the path that would permanently relinquish the inner blaze-like comfort and inner outer burning fire-like suffering of discomfort. And having sought that right path, having faith in it, having practiced it correctly, became absorbed in the innate, pure-natured supreme state of the self that is of the nature of unobstructed happiness. The great ones who sought the root causes of the manifestation or experience of comfort-discomfort, such extraordinary, joyfully astonishing inclination would arise in them, that more than comfort, if there was manifestation of discomfort, and that too, when it manifested with greater intensity, their vigour would awaken more, would gain zealousness, and that time would appear greatly beneficial. For some special reasons, they would take the medicines etc., appropriate for consumption from the practical point of view, remaining in self-discipline. But mostly, they would practice that supreme calmness alone as the best medication. Mastering the view of seeing the self, that is eternally radiant due to its characteristic of consciousness, as separate from the physical body, energy body and karmic body; that self of the inherent nature of consciousness, due to continuously being of the nature to feel, until it attains the state of no bondage, it cannot remain without feeling the experiences of comfort and discomfort, determining thus; by becoming detached towards that flow of good and bad inclinations, the inclination that creates relationship with comfort-discomfort; by accepting the right path of completely giving up that flow of inclinations which is unsteady by nature, occurring in that self which is separate from the body etc. and remains in the limit of its own nature; that illuminating self which is of the nature of supremely pure consciousness, withdrawing from those inclinations with impurities caused due to association with karma; the way by which one can become calm, become steady in that awareness and in that self, become steadfast; only that focus, only that contemplation, only that reflection and only that natural state of being is worth bringing forth. That alone is the repeated counsel of the great ones. For the aspirants who are seeking that right path, desiring to have faith in it, desiring to attain it, till the right path is fully accomplished, it is necessary to worship with supreme devotion the supremely dispassionate God; the Guru who is devout to the self, free from desires, and free from the knots of ignorance; the religious conduct rooted in supreme compassion, and the scriptures expounding supremely peaceful essence through mystical statements; which are the supreme causes for one’s welfare. Here, I end this letter by quoting a verse I recall. Bheesan narayagaiye, tiriyagaiye kudevmanuyagaiye; Pattosi tivv dukham, bhaavhi Jinbhaavna jeev. In the frightening hell, in animal form, and unfavourable celestial and human form of life, O soul! You underwent immense suffering, so at least now, contemplate-reflect on the Jina bhaavna (the supreme peaceful reflection that the Jina Bhagwan abided in the self as supreme peaceful essence) (so that such infinite sufferings are completely relinquished and supreme, unobstructed wealth of happiness is attained.) Aum Peace Peace Peace Home Archives for 2025 Page 20 Children’s Camp at the Ashram Celebrating 125 Years of Param Krupalu Dev’s Grace in Dharampur, Shrimad Rajchandra Mission organized a vibrant Children’s Camp for children aged 4 to 12, receiving an overwhelming 1191 registrations from Dharampur town. For many, it was their first camp experience.
You underwent immense suffering, so at least now, contemplate-reflect on the Jina bhaavna (the supreme peaceful reflection that the Jina Bhagwan abided in the self as supreme peaceful essence) (so that such infinite sufferings are completely relinquished and supreme, unobstructed wealth of happiness is attained.) Aum Peace Peace Peace
