Physiological Cord Clamping Method Research Published in American Journal of Perinatology and Supported by Govt. of India:

    • A path-breaking research study was recently carried out in Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital, which is one of the two centres chosen across India for conducting this research. The results of the study were also published in the prestigious peer-reviewed American Journal of Perinatology.
    • The study, which suggested an improvement in the current practice of childbirth, explored a technique known as ‘physiological cord clamping’. The technique involves delaying the severing of the umbilical cord until natural delivery of the placenta. This is contrary to the currently prevailing global practice of cutting the umbilical cord within a few minutes of delivery and forcing out the placenta with medical assistance.
    • The study showed that when the above technique is combined with immediate skin-to-skin contact between the infant and mother, and allowing the infant to suckle the mother as soon as possible, several significant benefits are noticed. These benefits include improved cognitive and developmental performance for the newborn, and nil to minimum postpartum haemorrhage for the mother.
    • This study has been mentioned in the American Journal of Perinatology.
    • The Department of Health and Family Welfare, Gandhinagar has already asked all Government Hospitals and Centres in Gujarat to adopt this method of delivery. Additionally, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), New Delhi, released an advisory requesting all States in India to take forward this key intervention.
    • Through such initiatives, Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital continues to be at the cutting-edge of medicine and implement the best practices to further serve and treat the rural population of Gujarat!
