What is the purpose of a Guru in a seeker’s life? Is the Guru someone who gives answers, offers spiritual practices, or simply guides us through the difficulties of life?
The role of a Guru is far deeper. The Guru does not give us something that we do not possess. Rather, the Guru helps us recognise our True Self.
We spend much of our lives looking outward for happiness, success and fulfillment. We identify ourselves with our body, thoughts, relationships, possessions and achievements, and yet the search for lasting peace continues. The spiritual journey begins when one turns inward and asks a fundamental question: Who am I?
It is here that the presence of a Guru becomes invaluable.
The Guru Shows Us the Way Within
Self-realisation is not the acquisition of something new. It is the removal of ignorance about our own true nature. Recognising the Self can be difficult because we are deeply identified with the body.
Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji explains that the Sadguru helps the seeker understand the true nature of the Self and the right method to realise it.
A true Guru, therefore, does not encourage dependence on the external world. Instead, the Guru directs the seeker towards the inner source of peace and bliss.
This is what distinguishes a spiritual Guru from a teacher of worldly knowledge. A teacher may give us information about the world; a Guru points us towards the knower of the world.
From Knowing to Experiencing
We may read scriptures, listen to discourses and learn about spirituality from some of the famous spiritual Gurus in India, but spiritual knowledge becomes transformative only when it becomes our own experience.

The Guru can show us the direction, illuminate the path and inspire us through His own state of awareness. But the seeker must walk the path.

The Guru Transforms, Not Controls
The relationship between a Guru and disciple is not one of control. It is a relationship that facilitates transformation.
The Guru can be described as an alchemist who transforms the disciple. The Guru does not remove the seeker’s challenges magically. Rather, through wisdom, guidance and grace, He helps the seeker recognise the ego, attachments and false beliefs that stand in the way of realisation.
The journey therefore requires sincerity from the seeker.
The Guru may show us our limitations, but we must be willing to see them. He may point towards our inner tendencies, but we must have the courage to introspect. He may show us the possibility of freedom, but we must make the effort to move towards it.
This is where self-effort and surrender meet.
Effort and Surrender
Does Self-realisation come through our own effort or through the Guru’s grace?
Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji explains that both perspectives have their place. The path of knowledge emphasises self-effort, resolution and transformation. The path of devotion emphasises surrendering the ego of doership at the Sadguru’s feet.
These are not contradictory.
The seeker strives sincerely while recognising that the ego cannot claim ownership of the journey. One works towards greater awareness while surrendering one’s arrogance, expectations and resistance.
In the presence of the Guru, surrender does not mean becoming passive. It means becoming receptive.
Recognising the True Guide
In India, the word Guru carries a profound spiritual significance. From ancient times, Indian spiritual leaders and realised Masters have guided seekers towards higher consciousness and liberation.
Yet, the true measure of a Guru is not popularity, recognition or the size of a following. It is the state in which He abides and thus inspires transformation in the seeker.
Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji’s teachings repeatedly bring our attention back to this essential truth. The Sadguru is one who is awake to His own True Nature and can awaken the seeker to the divinity within.

The Guru can show us the destination, illuminate the path and give us the courage to walk it. But the journey towards self-realisation is ultimately an inward journey.
The Guru reminds us of what we have forgotten: that peace is not something to be acquired from the world, happiness is not dependent upon circumstances, and the Self we seek is not somewhere far away.
Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji’s teachings invite the seeker to turn the search inward, correct mistaken beliefs and gradually become established in the awareness of the Self.
Perhaps, then, the greatest gift of a Guru is not an answer to the question, “Who am I?”
It is the awakening of the courage, clarity and yearning to discover the answer within.
