Mindful Eating

How eating with awareness assists in maintaining good health

“In this plate of food I see the entire universe supporting my existence.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

What is your favourite television show to watch while you eat? No matter what the answer, research shows that you have more than likely consumed at least 100 extra calories or more if you have viewed TV during your meals.

Mindful eating is forgotten by most due to external activities they may be partaking in during the same time. While it is utterly important to carefully choose the food you eat, it is even more critical to practise complete awareness while eating.

Tips to Being Present While Eating

  • Don’t watch TV, be on the computer or read while eating. If your attention is constantly drawn to something as attention grabbing as a TV, you will not know the quality or quantity of the food you are eating.
  • Do not eat too fast – slow down, become aware of your breath and focus on the meal.
  • Do not hold onto the fork, put it down after each bite. This will help you avoid binge eating.
  • Become a connoisseur, distinguish all the flavours of the dish you’re consuming and experience delight in each morsel.
  • Don’t eat while emotional – anger, sadness or excitement. It may lead to chewing ineffectively and overeating.
  • Eat only when hungry and pay close attention to what your craving is telling you during meals – when you desire pungent, sweet, sour or bitter elements, your body is guiding you as to what it requires in terms of nutrition.
  • Eat less but increase the quality of your food – ensure you eat nutritionally balanced meals.
  • Be grateful for your meal, a little appreciation goes a long way in terms of contentment.

With mindful eating, you’re going to enjoy your food much more and your weighing scale will also thank you for the results. The biggest hindrance to better health is poor food choices, the second biggest is not paying attention to the minute details. So mindful eating is the is the way to be.
