Seed of Life for Farmers of South Gujarat

The last few months have been extremely tough for the people of rural areas across Gujarat. While the population was grappling with the deadly wave of COVID infections which left several families without earning members, there was an additional catastrophe in the form of Cyclone Tauktae; one of the strongest tropical cyclones to hit Gujarat.

For the tribal population in Dharampur and nearby areas, agriculture is the major source of income. Farmers witnessed a massive destruction of crops and disruption of agricultural infrastructure due to cyclonic rainfall and powerful winds, leaving them without any means of sustenance. Pre-monsoon preparation of land for cultivation was undertaken by the farmers. However, post the cyclone they found themselves without quality seeds to yield good crops and generate enough income to support their families.

Realising the immense gravity of the situation and the need for immediate assistance, Shrimad Rajchandra Love and Care launched a Seed Distribution Drive through which 23 tonnes of government-certified seeds were distributed to 4,500 farming families in need. In order to make this drive reach as many needy farmers as possible and to ensure last-mile delivery, community workers and volunteers were deployed to cover remote, interior villages for identifying and collating a list of potential beneficiaries. Certified seeds were procured from government-approved vendors. A complete distribution supply chain was established by creating primary centres and sub-centres from where the seeds were collected by the farmers. Home delivery was also organised for those who were unable to collect seeds from the centres due to old-age, sickness, inability to travel etc.

With the monsoons just setting in, this well-timed programme will prove to be a boon to the farmers and enable them to earn their livelihood and sustain their families.
